We woke up to lots of clouds and occasional rain.\u00a0 Our hotel is right on\u00a0Lake\u00a0Llanquihue in Puerto Vargas.\u00a0 It is the second largest lake in Chile and is quite magnificent with the Osorno Volcano looming in the background.\u00a0\u00a0 We decided to drive partially\u00a0around the lake\u00a0to the “ski area”\u00a0 which is right\u00a0on the Osorno Volcano, considered one of the most active volcanoes in southern\u00a0Chile!\u00a0 Both the top of the volcano and its main crater are fully covered by a permanent glacier.\u00a0 It was very\u00a0foggy and raining on the drive up the volcano.\u00a0 Volcanic ash was heavily laden on\u00a0both sides of the road and the trees appeared stunted in growth.\u00a0\u00a0 As we approached the ski area, it felt like we were on the moon.\u00a0 There were no trees\u00a0with only\u00a0large black “lava” boulders\u00a0and volcanic ash scattered all over and dense fog.\u00a0 It was very eerie.\u00a0 There is only one chairlift and a very small lodge at the ski area.\u00a0 We wanted to take the chairlift up and hike down; but the lift was not operating due to the heavy rain.\u00a0 We have discovered that the ski areas in New Zealand and Chile are\u00a0quite small and often difficult to get to by car (due to long dirt & gravel roads) compared to our US ski areas.<\/p>\n

Our next stop was the Petrohue “waterfall”.\u00a0 It is below the volcano and is actually a fast-moving, chute-type waterfall\u00a0with frothy white and aquamarine crystal clear water.\u00a0\u00a0 The unique thing about this waterfall is that it flows through narrow volcanic canyons shooting out immense volumes of water.\u00a0 Apparently, it is one of the most photographed falls in Chile.<\/p>\n

The Puerto Varas area is our favorite area so far in South America.\u00a0 The town is very quaint and has a predominant German influence due to the German immigrants who arrived in the lakes region in the mid 1800’s.\u00a0\u00a0Lake Llanquihue is absolutely stunning.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The area contains a \u00a0myriad of picturesque\u00a0barns, rolling green farmlands,\u00a0tiny, adorable\u00a0churches,\u00a0 charming ”\u00a0caba\u00f1as” \u00a0(cottages), and\u00a0\u00a0impressive\u00a0estates that are\u00a0on the lake and tucked into the hills\u00a0.<\/p>\n

We drove north along the lake\u00a0to Frutillar where there is a very large concert hall on the shore.\u00a0 It is a small artsy community and absolutely adorable.\u00a0 There are many little German caf\u00e9s and restaurants on the shore and throughout this little town.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We couldn’t figure out how this enormous hall was supported until we were driving out towards the freeway.\u00a0 The area has a large industrial base of research labs (Novartis, Nestle, etc.)\u00a0and manufacturing facilities that must provide the support.<\/p>\n
