Before we left the Mt. Cook area we decided that we had to get in\u00a02 more hikes in the morning.\u00a0 We packed up our stuff and drove 8 km to see the glacier lakes as well as the Tasman glacier.\u00a0 A warning sign told us that there might be delays on the trail because of trail construction. \u00a0Well,\u00a0 it was Saturday and no one was around.\u00a0 As we started up the hill there was stair frames but no filling to complete\u00a0the \u00a0stairway.\u00a0 Up a short series of steps, we went left to the “Blue Lakes”.\u00a0 \u00a0After following a small trail & “bouldering” significant portions \u00a0(bouldering is “walking” over significant boulders vs. a trail), all we saw was 3 small \u00a0green murky lakes.\u00a0 It was certainly\u00a0not \u00a0worth the “death-defying” effort put forth to climb over the significant size\u00a0boulders!\u00a0 We finally ended up on a gravel\/rock road.\u00a0 After following it up the canyon for an hour further into the hills, we gave up and turned around.\u00a0 No real “blue glacier lakes” were to be found.<\/p>\n
Next stop\u00a0was back up the hill to the “Tasman glacier views”.\u00a0 We started from the parking lot again and up the hill we went\u00a0discovering\u00a0that the construction stair frames went all of the way up the rather steep\u00a0hill – quite difficult to maneuver. We did it and struggled more to get down than up.\u00a0 The views were nice but, frankly, not worth the work.<\/p>\n
Then — off to Lake Wanaka, a 3+ hour drive.\u00a0\u00a0 We saw lots and lots\u00a0of sheep & scenic\u00a0farmland along the way.\u00a0\u00a0Once we got to our\u00a0“chalet” (which was adorable)\u00a0in Wanaka, we were\u00a0dazzled\u00a0by the view\u00a0 of the mountains & lake.\u00a0 The downtown, which was a 5 minute walk for us, \u00a0was thriving with bars & restaurants.\u00a0 What a cute town.\u00a0 We dined\u00a0at \u00a0Alivate, an Asian-fusion restaurant, while\u00a0 overlooking\u00a0beautiful\u00a0Lake Wanaka with the snow capped mountains in the distance.<\/p>\n
